The monumental "Hammerklavier" Sonata, written for a then-new and as-yet undervalued instrument—was composed after Beethoven had already lost his hearing. The composer declared: "Here is a sonata that will give pianists quite a challenge"—a challenge Evgeny Kissin joyfully undertakes. He finishes his recital with his performance of several of Rachmaninov's 24 Preludes, a Romantic work loosely inspired by Chopin's Preludes.

komorní hudba

PROGRAM
Franz Schubert, Fantasy for Violin and Piano in C Major, D. 934
Claude Debussy, Violin and Piano Sonata No. 3 in G Minor
Béla Bartók, Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 1, Sz. 75

Follow two celebrated soloists, violinist Leonidas Kavakos and pianist Yuja Wang, on their journey through three virtuosic and fantasy-filled works for violin and piano by Schubert, Debussy, and Bartók.

Many might consider it an artist's prerogative to go on flights of fancy, following one's impulses into unexplored and even esoteric territory. The composers programmed on this concert bring us along with them on that journey. The first two works—Schubert's aptly-named Fantasy for Violin and Piano in C Major, and Debussy's Sonata No. 3 for Violin and Piano in G Minor—both date to the last year of their composers' lives, and bear the marks of their creators' dizzying searches for new and virtuosic modes of expression. The third and final work, Béla Bartók's Sonata No. 1 for Violin and Piano, dates to the middle of the composer's career and the height of his modernist period, but nonetheless features the fascinating blend of folk music-inspired melodies and and rhythms that flavor the entirety of his œuvre.

DETAILS

Janine Jansen, Lucas Debargue, Mischa Maisky, Martin Fröst, and Torleif Thedéen—some of the greatest soloists of their generation—meet in the Verbier Church for an evening of music marked by difficult times.

The concert opens with two Piano Trios by Shostakovich. The composer was barely 17 when he composed the first trio, a work that is rarely performed nowadays. Some 20 years later, he dedicated his second Trio, composed in 1944 during World War II, in memory of his friend who had suddenly disappeared: the musicologist, art historian, literary and music critic Ivan I. Sollertinski. The trios are followed by Messiaen's Quatuor pour la fin du temps (Quartet for the End of Time), written during the composer's captivity in a German prisoner-of-war camp in 1940-1941. Inspired by the story of the Apocalypse of Saint John, the score contains the following quotation: “In homage to the Angel of the Apocalypse, who lifts his hand toward heaven, saying, ‘There shall be time no longer.’ ”

Alexander Konstantinovich Glazunov, From the Middle Ages, Op. 79

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Symphony No. 4 in F Minor, Op. 36

Mikhaïl Pletnev and the Verbier Festival Orchestra close the 2017 Verbier Festival with a concert dedicated to Russian composers. Janine Jansen joins them for Tchaikovsky's magnificent Violin Concerto.

The evening begins with a rare treat: the Prelude from Glazounov's 1902 orchestral suite From the Middle Ages. Evoking medieval Europe through opera without words, the suite portrays a passionate young couple blissfully ignorant of the furious storm that surrounds them. The brilliant violinist Janine Jansen then performs Tchaikovsky's beloved Violin Concerto in D Major, one of the most beautiful and technically-challenging of its genre. Despite the work's success, the composer never wrote another violin concerto.

----------------------------

Pozornému čtenáři jistě neunikl velký počet ruských interpretů a skladatelů.
