Even before the festival proper is fully under way, the four-day Whitsun Festival presents some exciting Romeo and Juliet-themed offerings in May. Franco Fagioli and Ann Hallenberg sing the doomed duo in a concert version of Zingarelli’s Giulietta e Romeo, and the annual gala concert presents Ádám Fischer conducting Angela Gheorghiu, Juan Diego Flórez, Benjamin Bernheim and the Vienna Symphony in selections of star-crossed-lover adaptations by Tchaikovsky, Bellini and Gounod. In May, and again in August, Gustavo Dudamel paces the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela in Bernstein’s West Side Story, with Cecilia Bartoli as Maria opposite Norman Reinhardt as Tony and Karen Olivo as Anita. (Olivo won the Tony Award in 2009 for her portrayal of Anita on Broadway.) As for opera offerings, Thomas Adès’s Exterminating Angel, which has its world premiere in Salzburg on July 28, is already slated for runs in Copenhagen and at Covent Garden and the Met. At Salzburg, Tom Cairns directs; sets and costumes are by Hildegard Bechtler. Adès’s opera, based on Luis Buñuel’s film El Ángel Exterminador, boasts a large cast, including Amanda Echalaz, Audrey Luna, Anne Sofie von Otter, Sally Matthews, Christine Rice, Iestyn Davies and Thomas Allen. Alvis Hermanis’s new staging of Strauss’s Liebe der Danae stars Krassimira Stoyanova, conducted by Franz Welser-Möst. Faust plays in its Salzburg Festival premiere, with Piotr Beczala, Ildar Abdrazakov and Maria Agresta. Sven-Eric Bechtolf’s Mozart–da Ponte cycle is revived; Luca Pisaroni appears in two of the three operas. Anna Netrebko sings Manon Lescaut opposite the des Grieux of Yusif Eyvazov in concerts of Puccini’s opera; after the August 7 performance, a gala honors Netrebko and benefits Salzburg’s youth programs. Joyce DiDonato and Juan Diego Flórez give voice to the rarity Il Templario, composed by Vienna Philharmonic founder Otto Nicolai, in two concerts conducted by Andrés Orozco Estrada. Sonya Yoncheva sings Thaïs, with Plácido Domingo as Athanaël, in a single concert performance. In the concert-music realm, Salzburg has devoted a number of programs to the sacred music of the churches of Eastern Christianity; ensembles from Russia, Armenia, Greece, Lebanon, Egypt and Ethiopia make guest appearances. Peter Eötvös’s oratorio Halleluja, for mezzo, tenor, speaker, choir and orchestra, receives its world premiere.

This year’s festival is all about Italy and Shakespeare. Verdi’s three takes on the playwright’s plays take the stage at Olavinlinna Castle—Otello, with Aleksandrs Antonenko as the title Moor; Falstaff, in Cristina Mazzavillani Muti’s direction from the Ravenna Festival; and Macbeth, also imported from Ravenna. Teatro Regio di Torino similarly provides two productions, La Bohème and Norma, both conducted by Gianandrea Noseda, to this Finnish festival. Also on the docket are operas by Janáček and Mozart and a Schubert Mass.

Among the French festival’s five new productions this summer, Esa-Pekka Salonen paces Katie Mitchell’s new staging of Pelléas et Mélisande (see “Forensic Eye”), with Stéphane Degout and Barbara Hannigan as Debussy’s title characters, and Handel’s oratorio Il Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno receives a full staging, by Krzysztof Warlikowski, with Emmanuelle Haïm conducting Le Concert d’Astrée. Louis Langrée conducts most performances of Così Fan Tutte; Lenneke Ruiten, Kate Lindsey and Sandrine Piau are Fiordiligi, Dorabella and Despina, and Joel Prieto, Nahuel di Pierro and Rodney Gilfry are Ferrando, Guglielmo and Don Alfonso. Aix presents a world premiere, with a libretto in Arabic and French—Kalîla wa Dimna, composed by Moneim Adwan. Also onstage are Rameau’s Zoroastre in concert and Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex paired with the composer’s Symphony of Psalms, for chorus; Salonen conducts the Stravinksy evenings.

After an exciting Easter Festival, Baden-Baden returns with some even bigger names for its spring and summer programming. A new production of Mefistofele opens the Whitsun Festival, with Alex Penda as Margherita, Charles Castronovo as Faust and Erwin Schrott as the titular devil; Schrott later sings a concert of tango music. Iván Fischer conducts the Budapest Orchestra in Mozart’s Requiem. A concert version of Wagner’s Walküre showcases Valery Gergiev pacing the Mariinsky Orchestra and Jonas Kaufmann (Siegmund), René Pape (Wotan), Eva-Maria Westbroek (Sieglinde) and Ekaterina Gubanova (Fricka). Of the seventeen operas that will be performed over six weeks, two are production premieres. The first, Calixto Bieito’s staging of La Juive, features Kristine Opolais as the title Jewish woman and Roberto Alagna as Eléazar, her supposed father; the second is Rameau’s opera-ballet Les Indes Galantes, directed and choreographed by contemporary dancer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, in his Bayerische Staatsoper debut. This summer’s festival also features a number of productions that were introduced in the 2015–16 season, such as South Pole (which had its world premiere in January), with Rolando Villazón, Thomas Hampson and Tara Erraught; The FieryAngel, in Barrie Kosky’s staging, with Vladimir Jurowski on the podium; Mefistofele, featuring René Pape, Joseph Calleja and Opolais; Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, paced by Kirill Petrenko; and Un Ballo in Maschera, starring Piotr Beczala, Simon Keenlyside and Anja Harteros, who also appears as Puccini’s title diva in Tosca (alongside Jonas Kaufmann’s Cavaradossi and Bryn Terfel’s Scarpia) and as the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier. Two other sopranos making multi-show appearances are Sonya Yoncheva, who sings the consumptive Italians in Bohème and Traviata, and Albina Shagimuratova, who sings Mozart’s Konstanze and Donna Anna. Nina Stemme is Turandot, Johan Reuter the Dutchman, and Edita Gruberová is Lucrezia Borgia. Lothar Koenigs paces Richard Jones’s production of Lohengrin.

For the necessary nods to Shakespeare, Glyndebourne presents Berlioz’s Béatrice et Bénédict and Britten’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, in Peter Hall’s 1981 production, with Tim Mead and Kathleen Kim as Oberon and Tytania and Elizabeth DeShong, Kate Royal, Benjamin Hulett and Duncan Rock as the topsy-turvy lovers. The Berlioz, adapted from Much Ado About Nothing, makes its Glyndebourne debut, in a production by Laurent Pelly. Stéphanie d’Oustrac and Paul Appleby are the title enemies tricked into professing their love for one another; Robin Ticciati conducts. The festival’s other new production is Rossini’s Barbiere, in which Danielle de Niese sings Rosina to Taylor Stayton’s Almaviva. David McVicar’s production of Meistersinger, from 2011, has Ticciati pacing Gerald Finley, Michael Schade and Amanda Majeski. Two productions date from 2012—Melly Still’s take on The Cunning Little Vixen and Michael Grandage’s Figaro.

This summer’s festival theme, “Prima Donna,” will explore the work of women in music, featuring no fewer than eleven female conductors leading the festival orchestra in symphonic masterpieces and women singers dominating the concert stage. Ekaterina Semenchuk sings Berlioz’s Mort de Cléopâtre and Rossini’s cantata Giovanna d’Arco, for soprano and orchestra. Barbara Hannigan takes charge as both conductor and soprano, pacing and singing works by Debussy, Sibelius, Haydn, Berg and Gershwin. Sarah Connolly performs songs by Alma Mahler; in the same concert, Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts Mahler’s Symphony No. 10. Cecilia Bartoli sings a Baroque program; Diana Damrau sings Vier Letzte Lieder. The highlight of this festival is the “Symphony of a Thousand,” headlined by Christine Goerke and Peter Mattei.
