BBC Proms 2015

Roku 1895 se z iniciativy impresaria Roberta Newmana odehrála v Londýně serie koncertů, které měly mít charakter koncertů promenádních, ale pod střechou, kde se mohlo chodit, jíst, pít i kouřit, a jejich cílem bylo přitáhnout publikum ke klasické hudbě a také naplnit novou Queen´s Hall pro 2500 diváků, kterou měl pan Newman propachtovanou. Dirigentem byl tehdy 26letý Henry Woods, který festival vedl až do smrti v roce 1944. Koncerty se hrají dosud, jen  hlavní sál se změnil, když v roce 1941 byla při náletech Queen´s Hall srovnána se zemí. Od té doby je místem konání hlavních koncertů Royal Albert Hall s kapacitou téměř 4000 návštěvníků. Koncem 20. let převzala organizaci festivalu BBC a s výjimkou několika let na počátku války ho provozuje dosud. Dnes jsou Proms jedním z největších hudebních festivalů na světě. Trvají 8 týdnů od poloviny července a představují přes 100 koncertů a doprovodných akcí. Klíčovým tělesem festivalu je BBC Symphony Orchestra, který vznikl ve 30. letech a pravidelně hraje okolo 12 koncertů včetně zahajovacího a závěrečného. Všechny koncerty vysílá rozhlasová stanice BBC 3 a televize BBC přenáší okolo 20 koncertů.
